Featured Hangout: Hudson House in Redondo Beach
September 21, 2016 11:03 amLocated along a quiet stretch of the North Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach, just a few blocks away from the Redondo Beach Pier is Hudson House, a gastropub that’s also a well-known neighborhood spot. Owned by Nick Roberts and his wife Brooke Williamson, who was a runner-up on the 10th season of the reality competition cooking series Top Chef, Hudson House is actually named after their son.
Expect To Have A Great Time
Hudson House’s simple and unassuming dark gray exterior contrasts with their vibrant, almost industrial interior. Don’t expect a quiet setting, as the place tends to be packed early with a younger crowd that doesn’t diminish throughout the night and can become quite noisy afterwards – it is a bar and popular hangout, after all.
And yet, despite the sometimes-distracting noise levels, it’s the food that keeps Hudson House exceptional from the rest of the typical gastropubs. Sure, there’s the standard gastropub fare like ribs and fries, but most of their offerings have been described as upscale pub-grub, with items on the menu such as Toasted Edamame and Shishito Peppers with garlic, soy, and honey, an appetizer that seemed to have come from a Japanese restaurant and elevated into a special dish here; and Kale Grit Fritters with Parmesan and Sweet Pickle Tartar Sauce, which has had innumerable diners swearing to its addictiveness.
Heavier but undeniably hearty fare includes a Pulled Pork Pretzel Croissant Sandwich served with Fennel-Poppy Seed Slaw and Sweet & Spicy Pickles; Marinated Hanger Steak with Garlic & Truffle Cheese Fries; and the Hudson Pretzel Burger with bacon, Jarlsberg cheese, grilled onion, and wild arugula, which seems to be their speciality and a favorite of many.
The drinks on the Hudson House menu are exceptional as well, with a good selection of cocktails, wine, and a beer list that features unique brands and sorted by country and brewing style.
So don’t let the noise and endless crowd bother you a bit, because the combination of a welcoming, neighborhood atmosphere plus comfort food that puts you at ease makes Hudson House stand out from the rest, and worth a return visit.
